WHERE
TIME HAS STOPPED. CAMEROON 2000
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEXANDRA KALARUS

by the Society for Arts
as a part of the Young Artist Series
The
Society for Arts has the pleasure of presenting an exhibition of
photographs by Alexandra Kalarus "Where Time Has Stopped. Cameroon
2000" in the Gallery 1112b (1112 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago).
The exhibit will open on September 21, 2006. The artist will be
making a personal appearance between 6 and 9 in the evening.
Alexandra
Kalarus graduated from the Department of Art History at the Jagiellonian
University in Krakow. Currently she studies photography at the College
of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
"Where
Time Has Stopped. Cameroon 2000" is a collection of forty photographs
from Kalarus’ first trip to Cameroon. This country is not a popular
tourist destination, as the other African countries like Kenya,
Tanzania or South Africa are, so it makes the show unique. Kalarus,
who traveled in Cameroon with Polish missionaries working there,
gives us a true image of a contemporary African country. As she
writes in her introduction to the show:
"I
was totally shocked and astonished by everything I saw there and
asked myself a question: how is it possible that at the beginning
of XXI century the world like this could still exist? [...] I saw
a world completely different than mine - European or American. That
world had a very little of technology that we use in our civilized
one, and it looked more like the beginning of our modern world.
Life in that remote part of the Earth seemed much closer to the
origins of life than to our own twenty first century's one."
There
is a variety of themes on Kalarus' photographs: vast and harsh landscapes,
hidden small villages, markets vibrant with life, every-day-life
scenes and portraits - nature and a man connected with it. Kalarus
is fascinated by simplicity and "innocence" of this world
"where time has stopped".
