in 1112 GALLERY OF THE SOCIETY FOR ARTS
JUNE 3 – JULY 31, 2016

The Society for Arts is launching its new exhibition season with a painting exhibit of Michal Herman, one of the most interesting contemporary Polish artists, who presently resides in Scotland. Nearly thirty works will be on display during red counterpoint show in 1112 Gallery (1112 North Milwaukee Ave., Chicago).

The exhibition opens on June 3rd and continues until July 31, 2016. The artist returns to the Windy City with this individual exhibit after 20 year absence.

Michal Herman (born on May 26, 1946 in Gdynia, Poland) studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Poznan and Gdansk. Graduated from the Lodz National Film School in 1976. Directed TV film „Cold Fires” (1977) and a number of TV dramas based on German and Scandinavian literature. Published poems and stories in Polish literary magazines. For many years owner of his author’s Herman Gallery in Sopot. Focused on his painting and unfinished novel „stinky black grouse inn”. He exhibits very rarely. His paintings are in a number of important museum and private collections around the world.

Herman’s art is of magical and theatrical nature. His mostly dark paintings are filled with grotesque marionette actors who seemingly play their parts according to a script. He spins reflections on the charm and passage of moments in life. His original style is characterized by perfect technique and precision in depicting moods and feelings of the painted objects.

For the very first time, the Society for Arts will display the works of art in eco frames executed by the Cracow artist Anna Werner who now lives in Michigan.

Michal Herman will appear in person at the opening on Friday, June 3rd from 6:00 to 9:00 in the evening. He will answer questions and sign exhibition poster published in a limited edition as a collector’s item.

1112 Gallery accepts orders and reservations of the exhibited works which will be available to corporate and individual buyers upon the show’s conclusion.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by Star-Tech Glass and Jordan’s Food of Distinction.

The gallery is open to a general public Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 6:00 pm. Closed on Monday and on days of special events. Admission is free.
