CONTEMPORARY POLISH GRAPHIC TRADITION
From June 25
to August 15, 2004 the Society for Arts presents graphic works of forty
three eminent Polish artists at the exhibition A SENTIMENTAL RECONNAISSANCE.
CONTEMPORARY POLISH GRAPHIC TRADITION in 1112 Gallery
(1112 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago). The exhibit introduces representative
works to all generations of the postwar Polish graphics, from the already
deceased Jozef Gielniak, Konrad Srzednicki, Ryszard Stryjec to leading youngest
artists, Malgorzata Malwina Niespodziewana, Mateusz Otreba, Patryk Lutomski.
At the same time, the show constitutes an extensive review of the graphic
techniques, from a variety of traditional etchings, aquatints, mezzotints,
linocuts to computer graphics and original own techniques. The exhibition
however does not seek to be any final critical definition of graphic arts
in Poland since WW II. In its concept, the show constitutes the first part
of the series of presentations which explore the extraordinary artistic
phenomenon. The works on display come from the private and public collections,
including the Society for Arts, Polish Museum in America, and Jan Fejkiel
Gallery in Cracow. The Polish graphic art - studio graphics, poster, drawing
-has become the Polish brand on the European art scene in the recent half
of the century.
For years the Polish artists have had a high reputation for the innovative
nature and high quality of their work. They have been present in the vanguard
movements in the 20th century art; the work of Jan Lenica, Roman Cieslewicz,
and Jan Lebenstein, particularly active outside of Poland, found a great
number of followers worldwide.A SENTIMENTAL RECONNAISSANCE expo is curated
by Monika Nowak, a graduate of the History of Art Department at the Jagiellonian
University, co-organizer of numerous editions of the Cracow International
Graphics Biennale; and at the moment, resident in the United States where
she collects material for her thesis on the promotion of Polish art in North
America. The "Contemporary Polish Graphic Tradition" series of
exhibitions is coordinated by Christopher Kamyszew, Director of the Society
for Arts , who has been organizing the museum and gallery shows of the Polish
graphics in North
America for nearly twenty years. The event opening on June 25th will be attended
by one of the participating artists,. Wojciech Krzywoblocki of Vienna. A
part of works on display is for sale to private and corporate collections.
A limited edition exhibition poster is for sale at $ 15.00. Upon a completion
of the series, a comprehensive catalogue containing critical texts and numerous
photos of the presented works is scheduled for publication. The 2004 list
of individual shows of Polish graphic artists in the 1112b Gallery includes,
after significant exhibits of Janina Kraupe and Jan Lebenstein, the expositions
of Anna Sobol Wejman, Grzegorz Banaszkiewicz as well as extensive retrospective
of works on paper by Andrzej Strumillo. 1112 Gallery is open to a general
